Quick Ideas to Overcome Discouragement, Depression and Bipolar Illness

By Patricia Potts

1. Identify the negative emotion (fear, anxiety etc.)

2. Pray for specific help and inspiration to know what to do about it.

Ask God to help you know which of these ideas (or others) will help.

(you may consider asking someone to pray with you)

Medication (if needed?)

Nutrition?

Exercise? (One of the most important things to do)

Positive, Inspirational reading, songs etc.?

Praying. Ask God or my higher power to protect me from negative and evil influences?

Reading Spiritually healing books, meditating, connecting with your higher power

tapping(Peggy McFarland teaches this and explains it in her website. Excellent.)

muscle relaxants

take neurozone

listen to a tape that can help you with that emotion (I have many available. Email me)

CTR- COUNT THE RIGHT about 10 - 15 things then thank God for them!

Racing Thoughts? - Try eating something like whole wheat bread or a banana

Consider food therapy http://www.jaredstory.com/depression_food_therapy.html

Homeopathy (many books and practitioners available)

Journaling the cause of my depression?

Doing cognitive therapy? (see youtube demonstrations on my website about "leafing" your negative feelings…)

No-Cost inner-circle support? (*This can come from family, friends etc)

No-Cost community support? (*This can some from Church, NAMI, 12-step groups etc.)

No-Cost Support?

Remembering that my higher power can help me and "this too shall pass."

Accepting things the way they are?

Asking "Do I have total, partial or no-control?"

Vocalizing my grief through groans, moans etc.?

Using oils such as lavender and peppermint, tranquility, clarity? (email me for amazing prices on oils)

*No-Cost Support for a time with child care, housework etc.(church, family)

Rereading past cards, notes and positive journal entries

**Trying herbal supplements

*Trying a ponder page

*Reevaluating your expectations

* Trying the depressurizing technique

You may need to get away for a few days

Thanks Thinking: Try writing things you are thankful for

Aromatherapy is easy to apply and is enjoyable

Sunshine - This can be critical for some

Acupressure and massage can be very comforting and insightful

Reading Motivational, supportive books or watch Youtube presentations. Search "motivational"

Miracles Minder: Begin a book with miracles you observe in your life.

Read it to remind you of miracles yet to come!

Smile every hour or so even if you don't feel like it.

Professional Support:* Psychiatrist? You may need medication

Professional Support: *Therapist? (I know of a person who does relationship coaching over the phone. Very reasonable)

Professional Support: *Hypnosis?

Professional Support: **Hospitalization (discuss with your Health Provider)

 FAMILY

- 10- Went skiing at Brighton with the scouts.  Johney injured himself and ended up having ski patrol help.
-11- Dan and I went to JB's for dinner then over to the Family History Center.  After about 3 hours of work there and 1 at home we were able to secure a birth record for Mary Jane Campbell and Dan found a marriage record on Bernard and Mary Jane Brown.  How exciting!!! Thanks Father

PATRICIA

: My "Love Dare" book challenged me to create a list of my husbands weaknesses then burn it.  It took me a few days to create it (I had to think hard.)  After a prayer (and a recognition that I had a much longer list than he did) I held it between my fingers and I watched it burn.  Soon I jumped as the flame began licking at my fingers.  After thrusting my hand in cold water I smiled as I realized that I held onto his weaknesses too long literally and figurtively!

- Margaret finished the power-point for our elementary school presentation. It looks great!  Thanks Father.

- I ruined the printer by putting the wrong transperancy into it. SAD. $400.00 SAD!!!!
- On the 5th Kerri and I drove down to Angie's house in Santiquin to have our speakers meeting.  She surprised us with a Valentines tea party!  It came complete with cupcakes, suckers, candied apples, sugar cooking adn a little tea pot with small cups!  He has a blast visiting before getting down to business.  We plan to continue speaking about Overcoming mental illness this year.  We each have a story to tell and we have help to offer. We had a chance last year to speak at the state mental hospital.  This year we hope to go to UVU and maybe even fly to Colorado in April.

- I felt blessed to learn that my friend, Angie, and Dave Eden, our handiman, are both listening to my audiobook.  Thanks Father.
- 7- Woke up with neck pain -- PAIN, PAIN, PHYSICAL THERAPY--flat in bed for a few days. Alan's massage sure helped me get better as well as Darla's Ten pain machine and prayers.
- 13- Our new printer finally came. We were just sad that it didn't have a flat glass to make copies with. I guess I'll use my camera more.
-14- I have had so much fun doing power point presentations as a Primary chorister.  Thank you Trisha and Dan!
